Why Visit Tirta Empul Temple for Balinese Water Purification (Melukat)

Why Visit Tirta Empul Holy Spring Temple

Pura Tirta Empul, translated to Holy Spring Temple in English language, is one of Bali’s most sacred Hindu temples. Located in Tampaksiring, north of Ubud, it is famous for its natural spring water and Melukat translated to Water Purification in English, a spiritual cleansing practice for mind, body, and spirit.

Why Consider Balinese Water Purification Experience
Many travelers now choose to visit Tirta Empul not just to see the beautiful temple, but are curious to experience water purification. Whether seeking healing, emotional release, or time for reflection, the purification process can be deeply meaningful.  Even if you don’t have any special intention, you may be surprised how you feel after completing water purification in such a special place.

New Visitor Regulation at Tirta Empul Temple (Effective 2025)
Beginning April 2025, the Bali government requires all visitors to be accompanied by a licensed guide to enter the temple for water purification. This ensures that visitors understand temple etiquette and follow the water purification process respectfully. . Bisma Cottages guides are licensed and trained to lead the traditional purification process, not modified or shortened for tourists.

Frequently Asked Questions About Balinese Water Purification (Melukat)

When is the best time of the day to visit Tirta Empul Temple for Balinese Water Purification?

Tirta Empul Temple is open to visitors from 8:00 AM daily. For the Morning Balinese Water Purification Experience with Bisma Cottages, we typically arrive at 8:30 AM, while the Moonlight Melukat Water Purification begins around 5:30 PM. Both experiences are magical, so the best time depends on your personal preference and schedule.

Is Balinese Water Purification religious or cultural?

Balinese Water Purification or Melukat, is both religious and cultural. Rooted in Balinese Hindu beliefs, it is a spiritual cleansing practice meant to purify mind, body, and spirit. Balinese people visit here a couple of times per year or every full moon if they are from the area. Non Hindu Indonesians also visit, so irrespective of religion all are welcome at the Holy Spring Temple.

Do I need prior spiritual experience to participate in Melukat?

No prior spiritual experience is needed to participate in Melukat, the traditional Balinese Water Purification ritual at Tirta Empul. Guests are encouraged to bring an open mind and heart to fully appreciate the process. Our Bisma Cottages licensed guides are locals from this village and share insights based from their personal experiences and family heritage.

Why choose Tirta Empul Temple for a Balinese Water Purification experience?

Pura Tirta Empul is one of Bali’s most sacred temples, known for its holy spring water used in the traditional Balinese Water Purification (Melukat) ritual. The spring is located very close to the purification pools, makes the water exceptionally pure and believed to carry strong spiritual energy – hence the name Pura (Temple) Tirta (Holy Water) Empul (Spring). Other temples offering water purification often use river water, which is considered less powerful. The history of how Pura Tirta Empul came to be in the Tampaksiring area is also fascinating and adds to the temples cultural significance.

Which experience is better: Morning Water Purification or Moonlight Melukat at Tirta Empul Temple?

Both the Morning Water Purification and the Moonlight (late afternoon) Melukat at Tirta Empul Temple follow the same process, but each offers a unique atmosphere.

During a Morning Melukat, the experience feels more refreshing and energizing, making it ideal for travelers who want to feel renewed. In contrast, the late afternoon or Moonlight Melukat creates a calmer, more meditative mood, with fewer visitors and a quieter temple environment.

Many guests find the moonlight session more peaceful simply because Tirta Empul Temple is typically less crowded in the late afternoon. Both experiences are deeply meaningful, so the best time depends on your personal schedule and whether you plan to combine water purification with other activities or sightseeing in the Tampaksiring area.

If you’d like personalized advice on how to include the Balinese water purification ritual in your itinerary, contact us and we’ll be happy to help.

Can children join the Balinese Water Purification at Tirta Empul?

Yes, children are welcome to participate in the Balinese Water Purification ritual at Tirta Empul Temple. When booking with Ubud Traveler, children under 12 years old can join the water purification experience free of charge.

Parents are kindly asked to supervise their children carefully. Please remain respectful and so that other guests and local Balinese can fully enjoy their spiritual experience.

What should I wear to enter the Tirta Empul Holy Spring Temple?

When visiting the Tirta Empul Holy Spring Temple, shoulders must be covered, and hair should be tied back if it is below shoulder length. We recommend wearing sandals that are easy to take on and off. During the Balinese Water Purification experience, you will wear two different sarongs: one for entering the temple area and another for the holy spring pools. Both sarongs are provided when booking with Bisma Cottages.

What should I wear to enter the holy spring purification pool?

Guests wear a special sarong over swimwear when entering the holy spring purification pool. For extra comfort, bring a wet shirt if you are prone to sunburn, as the pool area has no shade. The water keeps you cool, but please avoid sunscreen or lotions, as these pollute the sacred water.

Can I take photos during Balinese Water Purification?

You are welcome to take photos around the Tirta Empul temple grounds, but during the Balinese Water Purification (Melukat) ritual, your guide will take photos or videos using your phone.

How do I use the fountains during a Balinese Water Purification (Melukat) ritual?

During a Balinese Water Purification at Tirta Empul, place the crown of your head under each fountain and allow the water to flow over you. Do not touch the water before it reaches your head or the fountain itself. If you need support to balance, you may touch the wall on either side. Two fountains are reserved for cleansing deceased bodies and should not be used. Your guide will provide instructions.

How should I behave during Balinese Water Purification?

During Balinese Water Purification (Melukat) at Tirta Empul, be respectful, and listen to your guide’s instructions. Avoid shouting, talking loudly, or playing in the water, as others are praying and meditating nearby.

Are there toilets and change rooms at Tirta Empul Temple?

Tirta Empul Holy Spring Temple has new lockers, change rooms, and toilets available for visitors completed in 2025.

When is the Tirta Empul Temple busiest for Water Purification?

Tirta Empul Temple can be especially busy during Full Moon and New Moon days, as well as on Sundays. If you prefer a quieter experience for the Balinese Water Purification (Melukat) ritual, consider visiting on a weekday.

What else can you see at Tirta Empul Temple, Bali?

Natural Spring Water Source — a pond where clear water emerges from the ground, and flows into the purification pools.

Temple Structures — watch local people pray and give offerings. The beautiful temple structures have intricate wooden carvings and are surrounded by statues from Balinese mythology.

Presidential Palace — built by President Soekarno (1957–1963), sitting on the hill overlooking the temple proves even Prime Ministers knew Tirta Empul Temple was special.

Local Market Stalls — upon exiting Tirta Empul, there are stalls selling handmade items including clothing, bags, artwork and much more. Buying a souvenir or a drink and snack supports the Tampaksiring community. We recommend trying the sweet mini bananas, cassava crisps, or peanut crisps.

Can friends or family who don’t participate in the water purification process still join the tour?

Friends or family not participating in Water Purification can join the tour. There will be plenty of other attractions to explore. Please let us know when booking.

Are menstruating females allowed to participate in Balinese Water Purification?

Menstruating females are welcome to visit Tirta Empul Temple, but they are not permitted to enter the holy spring pools or the central temple area.
